Yes. Final Fantasy Resonance has a free demo that covers the opening of the story through the end of Chapter 1. Its save can carry into the full game, so the hours you put in are not wasted. It is available on the announced console and PC platforms, and Square Enix estimates about 3–5 hours to finish it.
What the demo includes
Square Enix describes the demo as the opening of the story through the end of Chapter 1. The PlayStation Blog’s PS5 announcement independently confirms the same Chapter 1 scope. Steam’s product page states that the demo includes the whole first chapter. The demo is free and does not require buying the game.
Steam also notes that some level restrictions apply in the demo. We did not independently verify the exact numerical caps, so we do not list them. The restriction limits how far you can develop your party, not whether you can finish Chapter 1. Everything beyond Chapter 1 is reserved for the full game.
Save carryover into the full game
Demo progress can continue into the full game. Square Enix’s announcement and the PlayStation Blog both confirm save carryover. The official Demo Trailer description, embedded at the top of this page, also advertises it. That makes the demo a real head start rather than a throwaway trial.
Save carryover is not proof of cross-platform or cross-store transfer. Play the demo on the same platform and store where you plan to buy the game. On Nintendo hardware, also match the edition, because Switch and Switch 2 saves do not transfer. On PC, do not assume a save moves between Steam and the Microsoft Store.
Platforms with the demo
Square Enix’s announcement covers the announced console and PC platforms. On PC, it explicitly includes both Steam and Xbox on PC. The PlayStation US product page lists a free demo entry for PS5. Nintendo Switch is included in Square Enix’s demo announcement as well.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches on Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Search for the demo on your platform’s store page. On PS5, choose the demo entry rather than the paid editions. On Steam, the demo download sits on the main product page.
How long the demo takes
Square Enix estimates about 3–5 hours for the opening chapter. That is an estimate rather than a timer. Exploration, reading speed and optional activities all change your own time. Our demo playtime guide explains the estimate in detail.
A no-commentary recording of the full demo on PS5 Pro runs 4:18:46. That falls inside Square Enix’s range. An upload’s length is not an independently timed average, however. Your own clear time may be shorter or longer.
When the demo launched
The PlayStation Blog announced the PS5 demo as available on September 3, 2026. Square Enix published its Demo Trailer the same day. PlayStation released its own Demo Announce Trailer on that date too. The demo has therefore been playable for several weeks before launch.
The full game releases on October 22, 2026, with Japanese Steam listing October 23. Starting the demo now gives you time to finish Chapter 1 before launch. Your save will then be ready to continue. Our release date guide has the full launch details.
What you will learn in the demo
The demo is the best place to learn the battle systems. Battles use a visible turn order, enemy weaknesses and stagger. The PlayStation Blog explains that stagger suppresses enemy action and lowers defense. Exploiting weaknesses leads to extra turns and Resonance attacks.
Visions are another core system to try. They let familiar Final Fantasy heroes add skills and abilities to your party. Learned Vision abilities can remain equipped within a cost limit. Our beginner tips explain how to practise these in Chapter 1.
Characters and reveals
Hands-on previews report Rain, Lasswell, Fina and Lid as the story party. IGN describes Rain as a knight, Lasswell as his childhood friend, Fina as a summoner and Lid as an aspiring engineer. Square Enix names Cloud, Tidus and Warrior of Light among the familiar heroes who appear as Visions. The PlayStation Blog’s demo announcement headline also revealed Sephiroth.
We have not verified exactly which characters and Visions you meet within Chapter 1. Previews covered press sessions that included later areas. For that reason we do not list a Chapter 1 roster. Our characters guide separates confirmed party members from Visions.
Trying the demo before you buy
Previews from IGN, VGC and RPGFan were positive, but they covered limited sessions. Metacritic showed “tbd” for both scores when we checked. The demo lets you judge the game yourself before reviews arrive. It costs nothing and keeps your progress.
If you enjoy it, the PlayStation US store lists Standard at US$49.99 and Digital Deluxe at US$59.99. Pre-order eligibility for the Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack ends at release. Prices and bonus terms vary by region and store. Our edition guides compare the options.
Using the demo to test performance
We found no verified performance figures for any platform. Video uploads in 4K at 60 frames per second are not a native rendering specification. The demo runs on your own hardware, so it is the honest test. Check how it looks and feels before you buy.
On PC, the demo also lets you check your controller and language settings. Steam lists eight languages, with full audio in English and Japanese. Steam publishes system requirements on its product page. Our PC guide covers the storefront choice.
What the demo is not
The demo is not the full game, and “Full Demo” videos are not full-game walkthroughs. It ends with Chapter 1. Hands-on previews estimate the full story at around 30–40 hours. The demo is a small but representative slice.
The demo is also not a guarantee of cross-save. Match your platform, store and edition to keep your progress. If you switch platform at launch, expect to start again. Plan that before investing your hours.
Next steps after the demo
When you finish Chapter 1, keep the save on the same platform and store. At launch, buy the full game on that same store and continue. Our demo walkthrough page explains what we have verified about the chapter. Our walkthrough hub will cover the full campaign after release.
If you want to plan further, read our length and missables guides. They separate verified facts from estimates. Both will be updated after the game is released. Every update is dated.

This page was checked on October 19, 2026. The demo was listed on Steam and the PlayStation Store at that time. Store availability can change after launch. We will note any change to the demo here.
If the demo is missing from your store, tell us your platform and region. We will check the official listing. Please include the store URL if you can. That helps us keep the platform list accurate.
