Final Fantasy Resonance’s main story is estimated at around 30–40 hours, based on hands-on previews from IGN and VGC. IGN also estimates 60–80 hours for completionists, but that figure has only one source. Square Enix itself has not published a full-game completion time; its official estimate covers only the 3–5-hour demo chapter. All of these are pre-release estimates, not measured player averages.

The story estimate: 30–40 hours

IGN’s Michael Higham gives an estimated 30–40-hour story in the closing paragraph of an exclusive hands-on preview. VGC’s Tom Regan separately describes a 30–40-hour adventure. Two independent previews agreeing makes this the most reliable figure available. It is still an estimate from preview sessions.

Treat 30–40 hours as a range for finishing the main story. Your own time will depend on how much you explore and how quickly you read. Battles can also take longer while you learn the systems. The range gives a sensible planning target.

The completionist estimate: 60–80 hours

IGN’s preview also gives 60–80 hours for completionists. That figure has only one retained direct report. VGC corroborates the story estimate but not the completionist total. We therefore attribute it to IGN rather than presenting it as settled fact.

Completionist play includes optional activities beyond the main story. Official copy names challenges such as the Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms and Ultima Weapon. How long those take was not measured in our sources. The 60–80-hour range should be read with that uncertainty.

What Square Enix has said

Square Enix’s official demo announcement estimates about 3–5 hours for the opening chapter. That estimate concerns only the demo, not the whole game. Square Enix’s store copy describes optional activities without fixing a completion time. No official full-game length was found in our sources.

That is why this page relies on attributed preview estimates. When Square Enix or players publish measured data, we will add it. Official figures will be labelled as such. Until then, the previews are the best available guide.

Why the numbers are estimates

Preview writers played limited sessions before release. IGN’s session included a later dungeon, but not the whole game. Their estimates likely come from information available to press rather than a full playthrough. We do not know exactly how each estimate was produced.

Estimates also vary with play style. A player who rushes the story will finish faster than one who explores. Difficulty and familiarity with turn-based combat matter too. A single number can never fit everyone.

Conflicting totals we left out

Search results showed other playtime totals in snippets. We could not trace them to a verifiable original source. Those totals were therefore omitted. Repeating them would add noise rather than accuracy.

If an official or measured figure appears later, we will add it with its source. We will show the date and method alongside it. Conflicting figures will be explained rather than hidden. That way you can judge them yourself.

The demo is a small slice

The free demo covers the opening of the story through the end of Chapter 1. Square Enix estimates about 3–5 hours for it. A no-commentary full-demo recording on PS5 Pro runs 4:18:46. That fits inside the official estimate.

Do not multiply demo time to estimate the full game. Chapters may differ in length, and we have not verified the chapter count. A demo upload cannot measure the full campaign. Our demo playtime guide covers the demo on its own.

What adds time beyond the story

Previews describe an overworld, towns, dungeons and Sanctums to explore. Nintendo’s product information describes exploration and optional content. Optional challenges include the Colosseum and the Chamber of Arms. Each of these adds time beyond the main story.

Building your party with Visions can also add time. Learned Vision abilities can remain equipped within a cost limit, so experimenting with setups is part of play. Players who enjoy optimisation will spend longer here. That is part of why completionist estimates run much higher.

Planning your playthrough

If you play about two hours a day, a 30–40-hour story would take a few weeks. That is simple arithmetic on the preview estimate, not a measured figure. Completionists should plan for considerably longer. Adjust the plan to your own pace.

Starting with the demo saves time at launch. Demo progress can carry into the full game. That means your first few hours are already done when the game releases. Our demo guide explains how to keep your save.

Length on different platforms

Final Fantasy Resonance launches on Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The content is the same across platforms. We found no measured difference in playtime between them. Loading times were not verified.

Remember that saves do not transfer between the Switch and Switch 2 editions. Restarting on another edition would repeat your hours. On PC, do not assume saves move between Steam and the Microsoft Store. Choose your platform before investing many hours.

Story length versus demo length

It is easy to confuse the different numbers in circulation. The 3–5-hour figure is Square Enix’s estimate for the demo chapter. The 30–40-hour figure is the preview estimate for the main story. The 60–80-hour figure is IGN’s estimate for completionists.

Each number answers a different question. Keep them separate when planning. Our demo playtime guide covers the first number. This page covers the other two.

Is it worth the time?

Previews describe a classic turn-based Final Fantasy RPG. RPGFan’s Scott Clay reports positive impressions, and VGC’s Tom Regan is pleased with the classic approach. Neither preview judged the full 30–40 hours. Full reviews will address pacing after launch.

Metacritic showed “tbd” for both scores when we checked. The free demo is the best way to judge whether the game is worth your time. It takes about 3–5 hours and keeps your progress. Our review roundup summarises the previews.

How we will update this page

After launch, we will replace estimates with transparently collected playthrough data. That means recording platform, play style and whether optional content was completed. Main story, optional exploration and demo time will stay separate. Each figure will carry its date and source.

We will keep IGN’s and VGC’s estimates on the page with attribution. That lets you compare pre-release expectations with real data. If the numbers differ, we will say so plainly. Accuracy matters more than a neat headline.

Last checked

This page was checked on October 19, 2026, before launch. The estimates come from IGN and VGC hands-on previews published in September 2026. The demo estimate comes from Square Enix’s official announcement. We will revisit all figures after release.

If you finish the game, you can share your time with us. Include your platform and whether you completed optional content. We will only publish aggregated, clearly labelled data. Single reports will not replace attributed estimates.
