Which Nintendo version should a Switch 2 owner choose?

Final Fantasy Resonance Switch 2 has its own edition, separate from Switch. Nintendo plans no upgrade pack or save transfer between them, so choose carefully.

A Switch 2 owner should look at the dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which Nintendo sells as its own product. Nintendo distinguishes it from the original Switch edition and states that there is no planned upgrade pack or save transfer between the two. That makes the first purchase decision important. The game launches on October 22, 2026.

Two separate Nintendo editions

Final Fantasy Resonance has a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and a separate Nintendo Switch edition. Nintendo’s US store has a product page labelled for Switch 2. Nintendo Canada has a separate listing for the original Switch version. Square Enix’s Japanese specifications list both Nintendo hardware versions.

Nintendo of America’s announcement trailer description names both editions alongside the launch date. You can watch that trailer at the top of this page. The two names must not be treated as interchangeable. Always check the edition name before you add the game to your basket.

No upgrade pack and no save transfer

Nintendo states that no upgrade pack is planned between the Switch and Switch 2 editions. It also states that save data cannot be transferred between the two editions. If you buy the Switch edition now, you cannot pay to move it to the Switch 2 edition later. Your progress stays with the edition you started on.

This is the main reason to decide carefully before buying. Starting on one edition and switching later would mean replaying from the beginning. Owners of a Switch 2 have the widest choice, because the original Switch version is also compatible. Owners of an original Switch can only play the Switch edition.

Native Switch 2 versus backward compatibility

Nintendo’s Switch listing reports that the original Switch version is compatible with Switch 2. Compatibility means it runs on the newer console. It does not turn it into the dedicated Switch 2 edition. Backward compatibility should not be assumed to provide the native Switch 2 feature set.

We found no measured comparison of resolution or frame rate between the two editions. Preview impressions are not a performance test. For that reason this page does not claim one edition looks or runs better by a specific amount. The dedicated Switch 2 product is simply the version Nintendo labels for that console.

Release date and demo

Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22, 2026 across all platforms. A free demo covering the opening through the end of Chapter 1 is available now. Square Enix’s demo announcement includes Nintendo Switch. Square Enix estimates the demo at about 3–5 hours.

Demo progress can carry into the full game, according to Square Enix. Bear the edition rules in mind here as well, and play the demo on the edition you intend to buy. Carryover within an edition is not proof of transfer between editions. Steam notes that some level restrictions apply in the demo.

Switch 2 hands-on impressions

VGC’s Tom Regan included hands-on impressions of the dedicated Switch 2 version in the VGC preview. YouTube creator Marc The Geek published Switch 2 demo impressions on September 3, 2026. Both are impressions from limited play. Neither is a technical comparison or a full-game review.

We do not convert preview impressions into performance figures. If you want to judge the Switch 2 edition yourself, the free demo is the best test. It lets you check readability, controls and handheld play on your own console. Our review roundup collects attributed preview opinions.

Early-purchase and pre-order bonuses

Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing identifies an early-purchase bonus called the Squire Kickstart Pack. That is separate from the pre-order pack, the Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack. Square Enix Asia states that pre-order eligibility ends at release. Steam and console listings word their deadlines differently.

Bonus items are claimed at the postbox outside the inn in the Town of Mitra after sufficient story progress. Check the Nintendo listing for the exact terms in your region. Our pre-order bonus guide lists every item in the pre-order pack. It also explains how the different bonus packs relate.

What the game is

Final Fantasy Resonance is a single-player RPG with HD-2D visuals and strategic turn-based battles. Nintendo’s overview connects enemy weaknesses, extra turns and Resonance attacks. Visions let familiar Final Fantasy heroes add skills and abilities to your team. Optional challenges include the Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms and foes such as Ultima Weapon.

Steam credits Square Enix and LANCARSE Ltd. as developers, with Square Enix publishing. Previews from IGN and VGC estimate the story at around 30–40 hours. Those are pre-release estimates rather than measured averages. Our length guide explains the difference.

Party members and Visions you will meet

Independent hands-on previews report the same four-character story party. IGN describes Rain as a knight, Lasswell as his childhood friend, Fina as a summoner and Lid as an aspiring engineer. Square Enix names Cloud, Tidus and Warrior of Light among the familiar heroes who appear as Visions. Visions are obtained and equipped rather than joining as extra story members.

Learned Vision abilities can remain equipped within a cost limit, according to the PlayStation Blog. That system is the same on every platform, including both Nintendo editions. The demo is a good place to experiment with it before launch. Our characters guide separates party members from Visions in detail.

Collector’s Edition and physical bundles

Square Enix’s North American store lists a Collector’s Edition bundle that includes a physical copy of the game. It also includes a Digital Deluxe upgrade code and collectibles such as an acrylic set, art book, soundtrack and trading card. The standalone Collector’s Goods Box excludes the game and the code. Regional bundles in Asia and Japan list different contents.

If you buy a physical bundle for Switch 2, confirm that the game copy inside is the Switch 2 Edition. The no-transfer rule applies just as it does to digital copies. Collector’s stock changes quickly, so check availability on the store page. Our Collector’s Edition guide compares the options.

Things to check before buying

Physical packaging and game-key-card status were not confirmed in the sources we checked. Current download sizes also need region-specific checking. Those details can differ by country and change near launch. Look at the Nintendo listing for your region for the current information.

Before checkout, confirm three things: the edition name, the region and the price. The Switch 2 Edition label should appear clearly on the product page. If anything is unclear, the free demo lets you test before committing. Choosing the right edition first avoids losing progress later.

Keeping this page accurate

This page was checked on October 19, 2026, before launch. Nintendo may update its listings with new edition details, bonus terms or download sizes. We re-check both Nintendo product pages as launch approaches. Every update on this page is dated.

If you see a detail on the Nintendo Store that differs from this page, let us know. Include the store URL, your region and the detail that changed. We verify corrections against the official listing before publishing them. That way Switch 2 owners always get the current rules.
